On October 10, 2019, at the National Aviation University, the American astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper met with students, teachers, journalists and everyone who is interested in space. The visit of the star guest took place as part of the celebration of World Space Week with the support of the US Embassy in Ukraine.
Introducing the guest, rector Vladimir Isaenko, noted that “one of the important vectors of the university’s development is to make space accessible. We are creating a powerful communication platform that will bring together students, teachers, scientists and prominent representatives of the aerospace industry of an international level. I am sure that this meeting will be an invaluable experience for future specialists in the aerospace industry”.
Stefanyshyn-Piper noted: “With this visit, I hope to inspire you to study the world of engineering, physics, etc., perhaps among you there are future astronauts. I remember the times when I was a student, then I didn’t even dream of being an astronaut. I studied engineering. Having failed the test for the pilot, I tried again, and again, but still they selected me for NASA. ” She spoke about the difficulties of selection, training on the ground, especially the construction of the station in outer space. Heidemarie shared her impressions of flights and stay at the International Space Station (ISS), about the features of the work of the ISS crew.
Concluding her speech, she said that today she told the story of her life, and what their story will be – depends on youth. “Today you must already decide what you plan to do, what is your goal in 10, 20, 30 years.”
Students of the Faculty of Law, who actively asked questions to the astronaut, took part in this event. At the end of the event, Stefanyshyn-Piper answered questions students’ questions, held an autograph session and took numerous photos as a keepsake.
