The fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly UNEA4 on “Innovative solutions to environmental problems and sustainable consumption and production” was held at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi.
The conference attracted a record number of participants, five heads of state and government, 157 ministers and deputy ministers, as well as about 5,000 participants from 179 countries participating in the Assembly and the events that took place during the week.
During the conference, the following issues were addressed: environmental problems related to poverty and natural resource management, including stable nutrition systems, food security, and ending the loss of biodiversity; life cycle approaches to the efficient use of resources, energy, chemicals and waste management; innovative sustainable business development in a period of rapid technological change.
In the high-level segment, ministers discussed future sustainable development goals, including sustainable consumption and production, illegal nature trade, with particular attention to the escalation of poaching and a surge in environmental crime. Also, two symposiums were convened concerning two key aspects of environmental sustainability: the environmental rule of law and the financing of a green economy.
At the end of the event, the session participants concluded that there is a need for a significant transition to sustainable consumption and production, noted that there is no single definition of a sustainable lifestyle, but by joint efforts of all stakeholders can create a chain reaction of change.
